Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women in the United States and thus it is important to study the psychosocial impact of treating this disease and potential ways to improve women's quality of life during treatment. A large body of literature supports the health benefits associated with both written and oral disclosure of emotional traumas in healthy populations. However, no published studies have investigated the effects of writing about emotional topics in breast cancer patients. The proposed research is a controlled, randomized trial to test the effectiveness of two types of emotional disclosure interventions. One hundred fifty early stage, breast cancer patients will be randomly assigned to one of three conditions: cancer-specific disclosure, non-cancer related disclosure, or a control. During the intervention, participants will write on three occasions about either their deepest thoughts and feelings about their cancer diagnosis and treatment, their deepest thoughts and feelings about a non-cancer related traumatic event, or a superficial topic. Measures of physical and emotional well- being will be collected via telephone at baseline, one month, and six months following the intervention. Medical charts will be reviewed to collect information about date of diagnosis, stage of cancer, type of surgery, type of treatment, and duration of treatment. The results from this study have important implications for psychosocial care of breast cancer patients and may inform future interventions for improving women's health.

This final overarching report in a series documents research and recommendations RAND offered to the Air Force to help strengthen the development of a new office responsible for monitoring and promoting resilience among Air Force Airmen, civilian employees, and Air Force families. Efforts to boost resilience have become an important military response to suicide and other markers of distress and poor health. The report reviews the concepts and measures of resilience, resilience factors, hardiness and flourishing. It describes how resilience and the military's Total Force Fitness concepts are related. The report brings together highlights from the eight companion reports on each Total Force Fitness domain and characterizes types of Air Force data that could be used to track resilience.

In 2003, the Navy Personnel Research, Studies, and Technology (NPRST) Department administered a survey about Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) programs to a stratified random sample of active duty Sailors. The survey included questions about overall perceptions of MWR as well as detailed questions about Afloat MWR, Food and Beverage/Entertainment, Outdoor Recreation, Auto Skills Center, Single Sailor Recreation/Liberty program, ITT, Sports and Fitness, Child Development, and Youth and Teen programs. Findings show that Navy personnel have very positive perceptions of Navy MWR, and that findings are generally consistent with past surveys. High levels of satisfaction were found with MWR overall as well as with the individual programs.

A new method of social choice is presented. The result of the method coincides with that of majority voting when it does not produce an intransitivity among the alternatives under consideration. When majority voting would produce an intransitivity, the method orders the alternatives in the same way as the transitive constituency would whom the committee members are most likely to represent. Analysis of the application of the method to three alternatives shows that the resulting order depends only on the committee members' votes between pairs of alternatives; the resulting order is less sensitive to irrelevant alternatives than the orders provided by other schemes; when majority voting provides an intransitivity, the hypothesis that, in fact, the committee's constituency is as assumed is almost as likely as the hypothesis that it precisely mirrors the committee. A one year no-cost extension has been requested and approved to enroll more participants. The results from this study have important implications for psychosocial care of breast cancer patients and may inform future interventions for improving women's health.

The aim of the Bright Futures project is to help women achieve better physical, mental, social, and spiritual health by encouraging healthy practices. Like physical health, mental health exists on a spectrum. At one end are feelings of flourishing and thriving, and at the other are depressed and anxious feelings. For a variety of reasons, the field of mental health has historically focused on the negative end of this spectrum. This booklet is different. It is not about treating or avoiding depression: it is about helping women like you to feel your best. The tips and information in this booklet are drawn from the latest research into what helps women excel in their day-today lives. This research suggests that coping skills (such as flexibility, feeling strong, and optimism), personal traits (high self-esteem), and resources (spiritual practices and support from family and friends) can boost women's mental wellness. As women develop these elements in their own lives, they increase well-being, satisfaction, and their overall quality of life. While this guide focuses on women's emotional wellness, it also touches on some of the more common types of depression and anxiety that many women can face from time to time. It is not intended, however, to help you diagnose or treat these or other illnesses.

This paper will focus on the means of building the soldier's heart, spirit, and soul. The Army trains the soldier's body through physical training and combining arms training events designed to build physical strength and endurance so that the soldier will be physically capable of withstanding the rigors of battle. The Army trains the soldier's mind by education in basic, advanced, and MOS specific training. Additionally, over the course of time spent in the service, other schools and classes are conducted to sharpen intellectual skills. The Army builds the soldier's heart, spirit, and soul by the values we instill. Over the years these values of loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage have been trained and reinforced in several ways. They have been taught in the classroom, commented on in efficiency reports, demonstrated on the field of battle, worn around the neck with the dog tags, and carried in the wallet on a plastic card. All this is designed to hold these values before the soldier's eyes. Always, though, they have been intended to give meaning to the life of and build the soldier's heart. These values are important precisely because they define and give meaning to a soldier's life. They speak to the soldier's soul, strengthen the heart and sustain strength. This paper argues that these values can do this because they stand on a foundation that transcends all of them, Christian Virtues. While not discounting the fact that other faiths speak of virtues, Christianity has played a major if not pivotal role in the formation of the nation, the people and the Army.

A large body of literature supports the health benefits associated with both written and oral disclosure of emotional traumas in healthy populations. The proposed research is a controlled, randomized trial to test the effectiveness of two types of emotional disclosure interventions. Early stage newly diagnosed breast cancer patients are randomly assigned to one of three conditions: cancer-specific disclosure, non-cancer related disclosure, or a control. During the intervention, participants write on three occasions about either their deepest thoughts and feelings about their cancer diagnosis and treatment, their deepest thoughts and feelings about a non-cancer related traumatic event, or a superficial topic. Ninety-six women with breast cancer agreed to be in the study. Measures of physical and emotional well-being were collected via telephone at baseline, one month, and six months following the intervention. A five-month no-cost extension has been requested in order to complete the data analysis. Preliminary results will be presented at the DOD Era of Hope meeting in Orlando, FL on September 28, 2002.
